“Blame It on the Bet” – new contemporary romance from author L. E. Rico

BLURB:

Welcome to Mayhem, Minnesota, where the cats wear sweaters, the local priest dispenses dating advice, and you can find your fortune in the bottom of a pie pan.

When her family’s pub is threatened with foreclosure, Hennessy O’Halloran, along with her three sisters, is determined to raise enough money to keep it out of the hands of the L.A. real-estate developer trying to raze it and replace it with a—god forbid!—multiplex theater.

Bryan Truitt always gets what he wants. And what he wants is the sweet corner property on Mayhem’s Main Street where O’Halloran’s Pub sits. But his “quick business” turns into more than he bargains for when he meets the feisty Hennessy. Next thing he knows, he’s betting her he can outlast Mayhem’s punishing winter in time to make the pub his—or he’ll gift it to her for free.

Hennessy knows better than to flirt with the enemy. But suddenly Bryan’s not sure which he wants more…the property or the woman who owns it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Hennessy O’Halloran is looking progressively more fidgety as I close the distance between us.
“I–I…I mean, considering our…you know…our arrangement…” she stammers.
“Which arrangement?” I ask innocently.
“You know…our wager…”
“Oh, that arrangement. Yes, you’d think things might be awkward between us. But they’re really not, are they?” I muse. She doesn’t reply—nor does she make a move to thwart my approach. “Quite the opposite, actually. It’s the damnedest thing, Hennessy. I just can’t seem to stop thinking about…” I let the sentence hang between us until, finally, she clearly can’t take it anymore.
“About what? What can’t you stop thinking about?” she asks quietly.
We’re only a foot apart now, and she has to look up to see my face. That means I get to look down into her perfect, milky complexion. I’m so close that I could actually count the freckles dotting the bridge of her nose. I wonder if she has them anywhere else…
Before I can stop myself, I lower my head close to hers, and for a split second, I know we both think I’m going to kiss her. But at the final moment, my mouth veers to her left ear. I’m sure she can feel the warmth of my breath as I whisper the single word.
“You.”
Except it doesn’t sound like a word. It’s an exhalation—a sigh—and it floats from my mouth to her ear and heats the space between us for the brief moment before I turn and leave her looking after me as I walk back down the hall, self-satisfied smile on my face.
Oh, God.
I am in so much trouble here.
L.E. Rico didn’t set out to be an author. In fact she’s made a name for herself as a classical music radio host—doing her best to make the music and the composers relevant by putting them into a modern context. It was just a few years ago that she discovered a passion for writing that blossomed into an entire novel. And then another. And another. And, while she still spends plenty of time on the radio, telling the stories of the great composers, she spends even more time composing her own great stories.
“The Lawman’s Apache Moon,” western romance from Debra Holt
BLURB:
“No more detours!” That was the promise Angelina Lord made to herself when she accepted a ride from a wedding in Texas, with the best man to her destination in Santa Fe, New Mexico. What could possibly go wrong?
Angelina is focused on one thing–opening a fashion boutique in Santa Fe. What she really doesn’t need is one full-of-himself lawman with his aggravating air of superiority and soul-searing eyes…not to mention heart-stopping kisses…coming to her rescue. If she lets him get too close to the truth, he could bring down the wall she erected around her well-ordered life and her heart.
United States Marshal Jace Blackhawke holds family and traditions as the center of his life. He isn’t part of Angie’s world and she certainly isn’t part of his. Will their differences prove to be too insurmountable in the face of the truth that will not stay silent?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Her attention was on the pair and her arms rested in front of her on the hood of the car. The part of her body that was visible was not bad. Not bad? Major understatement. He had a feeling that there was a lesson coming his way. He never cared for surprises and this felt like it would be a doozy when it hit. Darn Clay for talking him into coming along. He needed to get a grip on reality and get back to where things were amenable to his control. He pulled his eyes away from the mystery lady and returned to the couple who were definitely in the ‘kiss and makeup’ stage of the argument. Good. Time to get back to sanity and things that made sense.

The woman looked at him once more. His gaze landed on her. And he knew without a doubt that sanity was not going to be an option.

“Harper’s Place,” sweet contemporary romance from author Sheryl Winters

BLURB:

Harper Grey is fed up with overbearing men. Her father wants to sell the family hamburger joint to her brother because a woman could never make it successful.

Harper knows she has the same flair for business as her mother, and sexy Navy SEAL Patrick O’Brien dares her to prove it to the world.

When duty calls and Patrick must leave her side, will Harper be strong enough to make her dream a reality?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“How would you bring in new business, though?”
I’m amazed that he seems to find our conversation interesting. He’s an audience willing to listen and I’ve not had that in a long time. Damn this crush of mine. It won’t be easy to tame after tonight.
“New menu items, specials, things like that. Start serving dessert, like pies. Easy cook items. With the new burgers I’ve created and a new décor, I’d open in the summer when the air is fresh and everyone is happy to be out of the snow, hungry for grilled food. I think we could do fine.”
“What’s your hold up?”
“Tony, Dad. It’s complicated.” I shrug. His arm feels good, and I have the overwhelming urge to nuzzle against it. “Did you kiss Amy Parker when you were twelve? She still brags about it.” Did I just ask him about kissing? What is wrong with me? Will this mouth of mine never shut up? Stop it, Stop it, stop it!
“That I did, in a closet over at Robert Anderson’s house.”
“Ew.”
“I was twelve and desperate. You can’t blame me. I do blame that stupid soda bottle. And your first kiss?” There is a challenge in his voice.
“Kevin Monroe at the Klines Movie Theater. He sent me a six-page note the next day about how much he loved me, and I freaked out and dumped him.”
“Any regrets?”
I choke back a giggle. “Naw, ‘cept I remember I liked his cologne. It could have been aftershave, but it was nice.” It’s not half as nice as the Aramis that Patrick has on. Something about it sends a shiver up my spine that has nothing to do with the zombie waiting in Dad’s office.
“The dark isn’t so bad, now is it?”
“I guess not.”
Silence surrounds us. The fear that enveloped me seems to disappear.
“Are you seeing anyone?”
“No.” It sounds terrible now that I’ve said it out loud. Like I’m admitting to being a desperate and dateless leper.
“So,” he drawls out, “ever thought of dating a military guy?” He squeezes my fingers.
Is he serious?
His fingertip smooths over the rough callouses I’ve gained from years of hard work. Suddenly my wasted evening of not going out to celebrate is starting to look better. “I think it would depend on which military guy.”
“You’re killing me. You know that, don’t you?” His strangled tone only sets off a case of the giggles.
“Are you asking me out, Patrick?”
“Trying to, but you’re not making it easy.” The challenge is back in his voice.
“I wouldn’t mind a date or two,” I manage to squeak out. Breathe, Harper, just breathe, calmly through your nose, out your mouth. Sainted Mother of God, Patrick asked me out! I hit the jackpot! Now all I have to do is not hit him.
EXCERPT:
“Are you accusing Kitty of going after your brother for his money?”
“She wouldn’t be the first.”
Willie set her jaw firmly, just as she always had when she was angry. “A decade later and you’re still following your father’s example. You still think the worst of women, don’t you?”
“I’m simply waiting to be proven wrong.”
“You were,” she said quietly, almost too low for him to hear.
“Once, Willie, and even that’s debatable. Every woman after you has fulfilled my lowest expectations.”
She looked away, a pale blush spread across the creamy pale skin of her chest. “Mrs. Turner,” she reminded him, facing him once again. “Kitty’s not like that. She doesn’t need his money.”
“Both your parents are gone and last time I knew, you hadn’t a penny to your name. How can she not need my brother’s money?”
“Because I make sure she’s taken care of. I’d do anything for that girl, no matter how silly or naïve she is. She’s still mine to take care of.” She jutted her chin proudly, just as she always had. George had to remind himself that this was no longer the stubborn, hopeful young woman he once knew, but a strong, experienced widow standing before him.
“Mr. Turner left you comfortable then?”
“My finances are none of your concern. We are doing quite well considering our circumstance.”
He found that hard to believe. “Beg your pardon, Mrs. Turner, but a vicar and a viscount are two very different things. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll need to get on the road soon. I heard mention that there might be a great deal of rain coming, possibly snow, and I doubt the weather will hold off much longer.” He turned his back to her and continued gathering the necessary items from around the study.
“I can’t allow you to go by yourself,” Wilhelmina protested, ignoring his less than subtle hint that their discussion had ended. “There’s no way I could possibly trust you to address this situation fairly after the unwarranted judgment you’ve already made regarding Kitty’s character.”
“It’s only unwarranted if it’s not true and that remains to be seen, now doesn’t it?”
“I won’t let you do it, George.”
The use of his given name stopped him cold. He took a deep breath, then turned to her, arms folded across his chest. “What exactly do you propose I do then, Mrs. Turner?”
“Take me with you.”
“The Second Time Around,” new Regency romance from Ella Quinn
cover-second-time
Can a beautiful Worthington widow find love again? Depends on who’s asking…
Before he died, Patience was the Earl of Worthington’s second wife. So why shouldn’t Patience be allowed a second chance at marriage, too? Of course, finding a new husband was not something the mother of four had ever planned on. But a surprise encounter with her first love has suddenly made the impossible seem possible all over again…
It seems like a lifetime ago that Richard, Viscount Wolverton, was halfway around the world, looking for adventure…while Patience, at her coming-out, was left with no choice but to take old Worthington’s hand. Richard never forgot the woman whose heart he yearned for—and now that he’s back, he’s not going to let her slip away again…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Patience gasped. Not loudly, she was much too self-contained to draw attention to herself. But Richard could feel her pulse jump, and he was pleased that he still had the ability to shake her calm, to make her react to him. He wondered if her old husband had been able to command her attention in the same way. The corners of his lips twitched. Probably not. Whether she knew it or not, she was his and always had been.

If only he hadn’t been such an idiot. Who forgets the year of his beloved’s come out? A young man who had traveled halfway across the world looking for adventure, that was who. By the time he had returned home, it was just days before her marriage to Lord Worthington. He had argued with her father to be able to see her, but it was as if her parents had locked her in the house. When they’d traveled to Town for the wedding, he had followed. However, his pains had been to no avail. Neither her mother nor father was going to let him ruin their plans for Pae. After all, an earl outranked the heir to a viscount. There was also the scandal that would ensue if she broke the betrothal just days before the nuptials. He would not have cared, but he was the only one. Even his parents would have been appalled if Pae jilted Worthington for Richard.

Too late. That is what everyone had told him. But he wasn’t too late now.

Review of “Kiss Me, Sheriff,” from author Wendy Warren

RITA Award-winning author Wendy Warren’s MEN OF THUNDER RIDGE series continues with a second book, “Kiss Me, Sheriff,” a March 2017 release from Harlequin’s Special Edition line.kiss-me-sheriff-cover

Pastry chef Willa Holmes has come to Thunder Ridge, Oregon to live privately and bake anonymously. But when she makes the mistake of kissing local sheriff Derek Neel, then pulling away and running, tall, dark and sexy Derek decides that Willa is more than worth his time to chase and win. He can’t understand why she’s so scared of the very things he wants most—love, family, and forever.

I loved the give and take and the emotional ups and downs of “Kiss Me, Sheriff.” There’s plenty of sexual chemistry but the book is still a clean read, with nothing more than flirting and some steamy kisses. Characters from the first book in the series, “His Surprise Son,” reappear here and there to help Willa and Derek’s romance along, as well.

I’m pleased to give this sweet romance a 5-star rating. It’s a good read with a nice pace, a gripping, yet gradual, reveal of why Willa is so hesitant to give her heart to Derek in the first place, and a lot of reasons to cheer this couple on. I’d recommend “Kiss Me, Sheriff” for readers who like realistic contemporary romance with a guaranteed HEA, but don’t want graphic love scenes.

The Soldier’s Woman, Regency romance from author Kelly Lyonns

The Soldier’s Womanmediakit_bookcover_thesoldierswoman

by Kelly Lyonns

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance – Regency
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

It is 1810 somewhere in the chaos of war-ravaged Napoleonic Portugal. Miss Charlotte Everslea, dedicated member of an ancient secretive Guild and skilled paranormal artefacts hunter, has found herself trapped behind enemy lines. Colonel Maximillian Bladewood is used to giving orders and having them obeyed, both on and off the battlefield. But the petite golden-haired hoyden, to whose accidental intervention he owes his life, challenges both his authority and his sanity. Their cross-purposed journey will reach a crossroad where one or both of them  will need to compromise.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:   When Charlotte met Maxmillian
He was still holding her, and she wasn’t quite sure what to do next. There was a pause as she felt him lean back a little, probably trying to catch a glimpse of her face. It was extremely silly, but despite everything she had already faced, she couldn’t look him in the eye, couldn’t bear him seeing the red puffy proof of her crying.
“I wish I had a handkerchief to offer.” The deep quiet voice above her head paused, “Sadly, mine are with my dress uniform in a supply wagon, somewhere on the other side of this battlefield I should think.”
She was grateful for his attempt to invoke the humour and even a little civility to their situation.
“I most sincerely apologise, Sir.” Heavens above, her voice came out as a wavering snuffle. She could absolutely not look up.
He neither moved nor answered for some long moments. She felt a little trill of something like panic building in her chest. When he did speak, the words were all gentleness, despite the dust roughened rasp.
“It is of no consequence Madam. I think that we find ourselves in an unusual situation.” He cleared his throat before adding quietly, “I have seen strong men break down and weep after a battle. There is no shame in this.”
The little alarm that had been building evaporated. She still stood inside his arms. He had made no attempt to release her, but then neither had she made any sign that she wished it. Suddenly realising she needed to do exactly that, she stiffened in his arms and gave the barest push with her hands. Was it her imagination, or was there a moment of hesitation before he let her go?
“When a Marquis Chooses a Bride,” Regency romance by author Ella Quinn
MediaKit_BookCover_WhenAMarquisChoosesABrideBLURB:
Thanks to their large extended family and unconventional courtship, the Worthingtons have seen their share of scandal and excitement. But nothing has prepared them for this…
The Dowager Lady Worthington isn’t quite sure what to make of country-girl Dorothea Stern. As the granddaughter of the Duke of Bristol, Dotty is schooled in the ways and means of the nobility. But her sharp wit and outspoken nature has everyone in a tizzy. Especially their cousin, Dominic, the Marquis of Merton.
Prematurely stuffy, Dom was raised by his cheerless uncle to be wary of a host of things, including innovation, waltzing, and most perilous of all: true love. Still, there’s something about Dotty, beyond her beauty, that Dom cannot resist. But the odds are against him if he intends to win her as his bride. Will he choose loyalty to his family—or risk everything for the one woman he believes is his perfect match…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

“Kimbal,” Dom called to his valet.

“Yes, my lord.”

“I shall be dining at White’s.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Dom scribbled a note to his friend Viscount Fotherby asking if he would like to join Dom for dinner. By the time he was dressed and had donned his hat, Fotherby’s answer affirming the invitation had arrived.

A short while later, just as a light sprinkle turned into a persistent rain, Dom handed his hat and cane to the footman at White’s and found his friend lounging in the room that held the club’s famous betting book. William Alvanley, another of Dom’s friends, was seated next to the window with another man staring intently at the rain.

He turned to Fotherby. “What are they doing?”

“Five thousand quid on which raindrop will reach the bottom of the sill first.”

Despite being close with many of the Prince Regent’s circle, Dom could not abide the excessive wagers his friends made. Alvanley would end up ruining himself and his estates at the rate he was going. “Are you ready to dine, or are you waiting the outcome?”

“Famished.” Fotherby tossed off his glass of wine. “Thought you weren’t coming to Town this year.”

“My plans changed.” Dom and Fotherby entered the dining room. “I have decided to take a wife.”

“Wife?” Fotherby choked. “Any idea who?”

“Not yet, but I have a list of qualifications. She must be well-bred, not given to fits of temper or strange starts, quiet, biddable, easy to look at—I must get an heir on her after all—know what is expected of a marchioness. And not prone to scandals. You know how my uncle hated them. I think that about covers it.”

“A paragon, in other words.”

Dom gave a cut nod. “Indeed. I could wed no one less.”

“Land of My Dreams,” Christian romance from author Norma Gail

Today, I’m very happy to welcome author Norma Gail with a wonderful guest post on why Christians can (and should) read romance. Below Norma’s post is news of her latest book, Land of Dreams, and the link to a Rafflecopter giveaway…please read on! ~ Kadee

                                   “Why Christians can (and should) read romance”

a guest post from author Norma GailMediaKit_AuthorPhoto_LandOfMyDreams (1)

I believe in happily-ever-after because I believe God created marriage to be a happily-ever-after relationship. The Song of Solomon, found in the Old Testament, is the oldest romance in existence and some of the most beautiful poetry ever written because God is love and is the author of human love.

Romance novels are one of the top-selling, highest demand genres in modern-day literature. As a Christian who enjoys reading romance, I offer a warning to others: Be selective. Sweet, clean romance, yes. Christian/inspirational romance, yes. Erotica, no.

The world has forgotten that lust and sex are not synonymous with love and romance. Perhaps this is why Christians struggle with marriage and dating relationships as much as non-Christians. The rise in popularity of Christian fiction of all genres indicates a desire for stories with a Christian worldview, a view that offers hope in a world where there is none. A romance should encourage relationships that honor God and build the readers up as individuals. The author must promote wise, biblical viewpoints of marriage and dating.

The confusion about what constitutes love is at the heart of an astonishing array of opinions surrounding Christian/inspirational romance novels. One school of thought says romance novels endanger marriages, making women dissatisfied because male protagonists set standards real men can’t meet. However, a well-crafted romance can offer insight into how to pray for a loved one and encourage the reader to allow God to display unconditional love and forgiveness to others.

The hallmark of the romance genre is a happily-ever-after ending. In a world where too many bad things happen, it is comforting to escape for a while with something predictable and sweet. Humans have a great predilection for hurting each other but Christian/inspirational romance takes us on a spiritual journey with a promise that everything will turn out right.

Seek love stories that point you to the Author of love. Seek God’s direction in real-life relationships. Remember that while fiction may contain valuable life lessons, it is only a story written by a fallible human being. True Christian romance will never cause the reader to act in a way that is incompatible with God’s word. Enjoy romance novels with common sense and prayer. Remember that true love always honors and obeys God. After all, God is the only one who offers the greatest happily-ever-after ending of all.

EXCERPT:

When Kieran left his office, he saw Bonny standing behind her car, her foot tapping and shoulders sagging. “Can I help you, Dr. Bryant?”

She startled, and he realized he had been so intent on watching her that he had failed to give warning of his approach. The eyes that met his sparkled, their brilliance drawing him like a treasure hunter to a prize emerald. She was a lovely woman.

“Dr. MacDonell, hello. I’ve changed flat tires before, but these lug nuts won’t budge.”

He checked the urge to brush a smudge of dirt from her cheek. “It’s Kieran, and I’m glad to be of help.” He forced himself to ignore the nervous pounding in his chest and the urge to run. He was alone with the woman who had filled his mind day and night from the moment she had walked into the room.

“I’m Bonny, and thanks.”

“I’ll take that spanner off your hands.”

“Spanner? Oh, you mean the lug wrench, of course.” She held it out to him and smiled.

He took a deep breath. Her smile reminded him of sun breaking through a Scottish mist. His fingers brushed hers as he took it, and he realized how small her hands were, like his mother’s finest china. Dainty and delicate.

Something about the patient way she watched caused his uncertainty to subside. Rescuing a damsel in distress wasn’t a bad way to meet. Tossing the caber was no longer possible, but he knew how to change a tire. She stood near enough for him to smell her perfume—feminine, like a rose garden.

Review of “For Love or Money,” new Harlequin Heartwarming contemporary romance from Tara Taylor Quinn

For Love or Money

I really enjoyed reading “For Love or Money,” a new one from author Tara Taylor Quinn in the Harlequin “Heartwarming” series. Set in Palm Desert, California, struggling single mom Janie Young is all set to compete in the cooking competition show, Family Secrets. She can’t afford to lose, not even to a great cook and handsome doctor like Burke Carter. The prize money and packaging deal for the winner’s recipes will provide a secure future for Janie and her son, Dawson, who has special needs. Burke has his own reasons to win, of course, and Janie understands those reasons, but Burke already has so much…a beautiful daughter, a gorgeous home, and a thriving practice as an orthopedic surgeon. He also definitely has Janie’s attention.

As the competition continues over a period of weeks, the two families become close. Janie and Burke begin to care about each other and each other’s children. They also both have secrets that have nothing to do with their recipes. But they can’t get involved when both of them need to win so badly, can they? And, of course, only one can win. Will the budding relationship be over when the studio lights dim and the show ends?

I’m glad to give this sweet romance a 4-star rating. The moments of sexual tension are brief but steady, and the physicality is limited to a few kisses and thoughts of possible future intimacy. My only hesitancy is that this is a slightly longer book that was prone to repeat Janie’s and Burke’s thoughts, memories and fears multiple times, which seemed to only delay them in finding their happy ending. Still, “For Love or Money” is a good read with a nice pace and a lot of heart. I’d recommend it for readers looking for wholesome, yet realistic, contemporary romance with a guaranteed HEA.
